“Hey Kamari, are you ready?” they ask.
“Yeah…I think. What do you need me
to do?” you respond.
“We need to replace a broken antenna on the main
communications transmitter with one from the
buggy transmitter. They aren’t quite the same, but
we’ve figured out how to bodge it. Get out there
and I’ll tell you what to do. You’ll need a tool kit.”
“Got one,” you reply.
You give Kiran one last look, and they throw you
a half-hearted wave. You press the door release
button and step in, the inside door sealing behind
you.
‘It’s now or never,’ you say to yourself, and press
the door release. There’s a beeping sound, and you
hear a loud whooshing noise as the air is slowly
vented and the pressure inside drops. And then…
silence. The outer door rises, and you force yourself
to take a deep breath, remembering the first time
you took a breath underwater on your scuba trip.
back into the airlock. You jump for the controls and,
as soon as she is inside, close the door.
“You’re bleeding,” you say, grabbing your comms
to tell Sasha that you need a medic. You look at the
red stain spreading on their flight suit arm and feel
a bit light-headed.
‘You got this kiddo,’ – the memory of Maggie’s
voice whispers in your head. You pull one of the
spacesuit repair patches from the utility belt, and
press it on the wound while Kiran winces in pain.
“Get out of here, Kamari. You’ve got work to do.”
Sasha tells you that Skylar is on the way.
“Go. Skylar will look after me. Go on,” mumbles
Kiran. You place their hand over the repair patch.
Picking up a tool kit from the rack you get into the
buggy airlock. You set your phone on the ground
and click a button on the wrist panel to activate
in-suit communications.
You hear the voice of Devon in your helmet.
