“Hello. You’re Chen, right?”
“Yes.”
“It’s good to meet you. I’m Captain Adebeyo.”
“Hi. What… er…?”
Adebeyo smiles encouragingly. “I need your
help on something. Has Sasha told you what is
happening? Good. Now the orbiter has access to
the Moon’s internet through the crew’s implants.
There’s a lot of sensitive information up there. It’s
password protected but we’re worried it might
break through. So, I need you to go to the data
room and shut down some of the servers, ok?”
The idea makes you feel scared. You try to think
of an argument and come up with “But how will
we be able to communicate if we shut down the
internet?”
The captain shakes her head. “It’s ok, we’re not
going to touch the systems – just the data storage
computers. Come on. We need to get moving.
Every second counts.”
“Why?” you shout, then remember what that
might do and lower your voice. “Who’s doing it?
Where’s the spacecraft from?”
“Well, that’s it,” says Sasha, “they don’t know. It
could be a hostile country, or a private company,
or even aliens. Whatever it is, they’re treating it as
a threat. They’ve got the military involved. There’s
a woman from the UN who needs someone and
you’re the only one free at the moment. I’ll put her
through to you, ok?”
You like where you are. You’re nice and hidden,
away from any of the crew who might come past.
Let Earth sort this out.
“Chen, are you still there?”
You take a deep breath. “Yes, Sasha.
Put her through.”
A woman in a military uniform appears on the
screen. She looks calm and when she speaks it
makes you feel like she knows what she is doing.
Very much in charge.
