laboratory. You get there and are 
relieved to find that there are no crew 
inside. You lock the door behind you and 
sit down on a stool, with your phone propped 
up on the lab bench. The captain looks serious.
“Now, Chen. Let me go over the situation again. 
We’ve found out the unidentified spacecraft 
above the moonbase is sending out a signal that is 
messing with the internet chips in the crews’ heads. 
That’s why they can’t talk or do anything. The other 
problem is, they’re getting hotter and hotter so 
they’ll be dead in about ten minutes.”
You may be scared of the crew right now, but you 
knew them first as friendly, real people. You feel 
cold as you ask, “Aren’t we going to do something 
about it?” 
“You bet your bottom dollar we are!” replied the 
captain. “Listen, Chen. The engineers and mission 
control have come up with this stupid scheme to try 
and jam the signal from the spacecraft. We squirt 
out lots of radio noise and then the head chips 
won’t be able to hear it anymore and the 
“Where’s number fourteen?”
“In the other corner to your right,” says the captain.
“Why is it over there? Frankie is over that side of the 
room now.”
“Come on. You can do it.”
Again, you feel braver at Captain Adebeyo’s 
confidence in you. You sneak over to the server and 
crouch down to switch it off. As the noise dies away, 
you think I did it! and stand up. As you turn to the 
door, Frankie is standing right in front of you. You 
feel panic and almost run but the way he is staring 
stops you. It is like he hasn’t seen you. He is looking 
straight through you. You back away slowly and 
go round the corner. Walking calmly, you reach the 
door and close it behind you.
“Well done, Chen!” says Captain Adebeyo. “You 
happy to keep working with me?”
You stand a bit taller and reply that you’re happy 
to keep everyone safe. Captain Adebeyo gives you 
directions to go to the sample return
