You nod and feel a bit better. Learning
his name reminds you that these are
normal, real people who are just having
a problem. They don’t want to hurt you.
“Right,” you say, “let’s do this.”
Captain Adebeyo tells you that you need to find
servers twelve, thirteen and fourteen. The room is
a bit of a maze with towers of whirring machines
with blinking lights and wires everywhere. She
directs you but Frankie is moving about. Every now
and then you have to stop or pull back or crouch,
so it takes several minutes to find them. Twelve and
thirteen are right next to each other and you spot
the red switch that cuts off the power.
“Don’t we have to shut it down carefully?” you ask.
“Usually, yes, but this is an emergency. We’ll worry
about it later. Just do it.”
You turn the switches and the machines close
down with a sighing noise. You look around for the
remaining server.
And despite your fears you find yourself getting
up and going. The captain clearly has a plan of the
base in front of her, as she guides you simply to
a door labelled “data centre”. There is a security
keypad to open the door, but Captain Adebeyo
gives you the code number. You enter the room.
It is half dark and the sounds of fans keeping the
room cool are loud. You walk in warily. A shuffling
noise to your right makes you look in that direction
and you see the shadowy figure of one of the
crew. You quickly hide behind one of the big
cabinets that contain the computer servers. The
captain must have realised what happened as she
whispers, “Are you ok? Is there a crew member
there?”
“Yes,” you whisper back, holding the
phone close so she can hear over the
background noise.
“Don’t worry,” she says. “That will be Frankie. He
runs all the IT systems. Just stay quiet, don’t let him
see you and you’ll be perfectly safe.”
